with Creamy Shallot Sauce and Sautéed Spinach
I was really looking forward to this recipe because I wanted to try the shallot sauce. It looks so good, but so intimidating to make. Much to my surprise, it was pretty simple and quite tasty. Continue reading
Maybe I watch too many cooking shows. I see these people cooking up these amazing meals without having the laptop or their phones to get recipes, substitutions, ingredients, side recipes, etc.
I saw an ad for Home Chef and thought we could give this meal service a try. We had Classic French Green Peppercorn Pork Tenderloin and Apple-Gouda Smothered Chicken.
The cost. For the first box, I paid $49.60 for 2 meals for 4 people. That’s $6.20 per person. Since it was my first box, there was a $30 discount. Without the discount, it would be $79.60 for 2 meals, making it $9.95 per person.
The Home Chef website left a bit to be desired. I could only view the recipes for the current and coming weeks. I wasn’t able to see what else had been offered the same week as my first box.
The shipment did come with a Home Chef binder to hold all of my recipe cards, as well as an insert with recommended kitchen equipment and trips for prep and cooking.
Will I order from Home Chef again?
Yes, but only when I see a recipe that really piques my interest.
Apple-Gouda Smothered Chicken
with smoky Brussels sprouts
This is our second meal from Home Chef. I was a little skeptical. Apples and cheese. Apples with chicken. Hmm…
Classic French Green Peppercorn Pork Tenderloin
with mashed carrots and roasted asparagus
This is our first Home Chef meal.
When I read the recipe cards, I was really looking forward to learning to make the creamy sauce for the pork tenderloin.
I tried Hello Fresh when I got $30 off my first box.
We had Maple Glazed Chicken and Crispy Frico Burgers.
The $39.92 for the first box, with two meals, that’s not a bad price. It was a good meal at just under $5 a serving. I can justify that a few days a week.
However, the $69.92 makes it $8.74 a serving. For a family of four on a budget, that’s a little pricey for 2 meals. That could easily be 3-4 meals if I did all of the meal planning.
You are paying for convenience. Healthy foods tend to cost more. These are things to keep in mind when subscribing to Hello Fresh.
I also liked the cooking lesson aspect. It wasn’t just following a recipe, but the step-by-step instructions on how to make the sauces and plan them to make sure everything is done and hot at the same time. Something to keep in mind!
Will I order again?
Yes, but it won’t be a weekly thing. I can’t justify the cost. However, when I know that we have a crazy week coming up, I will definitely have a Hello Fresh box delivered. All of the meal planning is done, and the prep is minimal. I real meal, on the table, in 30-45 minutes with fresh ingredients. Yes, please!
Please Note: I paid for this Hello Fresh box. I was not compensated for this review of our first time using their service. If you have any questions, please contact me or see My Disclosure Policy.
Crispy Frico Burgers
with Caramelized Onion Jam & Roasted Broccoli
This was our second Hello Fresh meal.
I have been really looking forward to making these burgers. Though I find cooking ground beef to be intimidating, I was hoping this meal would help alleviate some of that.
with Sweet Potato Mash and Green Beans
We received our Hello Fresh shipment, and I couldn’t wait to use it.
The first thing I did was to set out all of the ingredients.
- Green beans
- Sweet potatoes
- Maple syrup
- Balsamic vinegar
