King Gyros

Since today was a chilly, gloomy day, we spent the afternoon at the main library. We explored before the kids settled on different activities; Lily on the computer playing ABC Mouse, and Navy befriending a little girl at the preschool playscape.

After that, we decided to find a new place to try downtown. After driving around for a little bit, we ended up at King Gyros across from Parkview Field. Lily wasn’t very old the last time we’d been, and Navy has never gone.

Our 2016 Goals

Each year, I make seemingly lofty New Year’s Resolutions with no clear plan I how I want to achieve them. They’re always the same: get in shape and manage our finances better. They also don’t last very long.

Lunch at Fort Wayne’s Famous Coney Island!

Goal #1: Go on adventures and eat!
We live close to a city with a lot to offer, not to mention everything in the surrounding areas! We have plenty to explore. There are tons of locally owned restaurants that we’ve never eaten at. Lots of festivals we haven’t been to. Museums. Shows. Events. There’s so much to see and do!

Goal #2: Get organized!

Our First Art Museum

We visited the Fort Wayne Museum of Art for the first time. On the last Saturday of the month, the museum offers $1 general admission. It is the best time to take small children with limited attention spans, especially for a first visit.

Having fun in the Early Learning Center at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art

I saw on Facebook that the museum had a discounted admission, so I planned that day for our visit. I checked the website to see what exhibits were being shown and general museum rules. The kids and I talked about rules (inside voices, walking feet, no touching).

We walked through most of the museum, but didn’t get a chance to see or read all of the displayed art. They had exhibits on cut glass that was very pretty, The Art of Seating, and contemporary photography. Lily was really interested in the different materials used to make the chairs and the process of making some of the photographs.

Big Rick’s BBQ

One of our goals for 2016 is to eat at more locally owned restaurants. Today, while running errands, Navy and I decided to get an early start on that.

We stopped at Big Rick’s BBQ on Hobson.

We both ordered the wings special with an extra side of mac ‘n cheese. The wings were delicious and messy. The coleslaw was creamy and tangy. I had two helpings (mine and Navy’s). Navy really liked his mac.

The café itself is kind of small, only seating about 20. There’s a patio, but December is usually a little too chilly to use the patio. I can see at peak hours that seating may be an issue, but they do offer carry-out.

Winter Storm Ion

24 hour time lapse of the snow

Winter Storm Ion caused quite a mess. Lots of snow. Blowing snow. Snow drifts. Impassable roads.

No fun. Please melt soon.
